Travertine pool deck sealed with an enhancing sealer that deepens the stone color, in Southwest Florida — Gulf Coast Sealing & Pressure Cleaning

Travertine is stone, and that changes everything

Concrete pavers are manufactured. Travertine was formed around mineral springs and quarried, and that difference is not a marketing detail — it decides which products may touch it, how it is cleaned, and what sealing it actually does.

It is everywhere around here for a good reason: travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete in August, which is why so many Naples pool decks are built from it. We clean, seal and install it, and one of our Google reviews is from a customer whose travertine paver patio and walkway we laid.

What is different about it

  • It is calcium carbonate, so acid attacks it. Acidic cleaners — the ones sold for rust, efflorescence or “heavy duty” concrete cleaning — will etch travertine, leaving dull patches that no amount of sealer will hide. This is the single most common way a homeowner ruins their own deck between quotes.
  • It is porous, and some of it is filled. Travertine has natural voids. Filled tiles have those voids grouted at the factory; over the years the fill pops out and leaves pits that collect dirt. Tumbled and honed finishes behave differently again.
  • It shows organic staining more than concrete. Leaf tannins, berries and anything oily land on a pale stone and stay visible.
  • It does not go grey, it goes flat. A worn concrete paver loses its pigment. Travertine keeps its color but loses depth — it starts to look chalky and washed out, like the photo on the left of the pair on this page.

What we actually do

  1. Identify what you have. Travertine, marble, and a concrete paver made to imitate stone are not the same job. We have cleaned and sealed textured marble too, and it is different again.
  2. Clean at the right pressure with the right product. Stone-safe, never acidic. Full driveway-grade pressure on travertine is a good way to open the surface up and lose the finish.
  3. Address the joints. Travertine is often set with tighter joints than a concrete paver, and what goes back into them depends on how it was laid. It is not automatically the same sand we would use on a driveway.
  4. Seal, and choose the sealer with you. This is where most of the decision sits.

Penetrating or enhancing: the one real choice

A penetrating sealer soaks in and protects without changing how the stone looks. Your deck looks exactly as it does now, just protected from oil, sunscreen and staining. If you like the pale Mediterranean look, this is what you want.

An enhancing sealer deepens the color. It brings out the browns and golds that are already in the stone and are currently invisible because the surface is dry and dusty. The difference is dramatic — the before-and-after pair on this page is the same deck, same day, and the only change is the sealer.

There is no right answer, only a preference, and it is genuinely hard to picture from a description. We will show you both on your own stone before you commit, because it is not a choice you want to make from a brochure.

Travertine installation

We install it as well as maintain it — pool decks, patios and walkways in travertine, marble and concrete paver. The part that decides whether an installation lasts is the base underneath it, not the stone on top: proper excavation, a compacted limestone base, the right edge restraints. Stone laid on a base that was rushed will settle no matter how good the stone is. Full detail is on the paver and travertine installation page.

How often

Not every travertine deck should be sealed at all, and does travertine actually need sealing sets out the cases where the honest answer is to leave it bare. Where it is worth doing: an enhanced travertine deck usually wants refreshing every two to three years; a penetrating sealer on a shaded patio can go longer. The test is the same as for any surface — when water stops beading and starts darkening the stone, the sealer has stopped working.

What you get from us

Free estimates, usually same-day. Licensed and insured, with documents we will send to an HOA directly. We walk the property and tell you what it actually needs, including when the answer is that it does not need anything yet.
